Basant Festival Returns to Lahore: 10-Day Celebration Announced

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a 10-day Basant festival in Lahore, scheduled from January 29 to February 7, 2027, with festivities paused for Kashmir Day on February 5.

The festival, deeply rooted in Lahore’s cultural and historical heritage, signifies the arrival of spring and has long been celebrated with kite flying, music, and traditional festivities. After a 25-year gap due to a ban imposed in 2007 over safety issues, the return of Basant earlier this year marked its revival as part of efforts to promote Punjab’s cultural heritage.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz described the extended festival as a "gift for the people of Lahore" and directed authorities to ensure stricter safety measures following incidents during this year’s three-day event, which resulted in 17 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Basant has been a vital part of Lahore’s identity, drawing locals and tourists to colorful celebrations. However, the festival remains confined to Lahore, contrary to false claims on social media suggesting a province-wide event.

Safety and public facilitation remain priorities as the city prepares to host the extended festival. Further announcements regarding the security arrangements are expected as the dates near.
